How to Get Better Sleep

Sleep is so very important. Our bodies renew and rejuvenate overnight and they were created to do that through sleeping and that include deep sleep.  Good sleep patterns will improve not only your mood, but your cognitive abilities during the day, your memory, as well as your health and wellness.

So when you wake up night after night after night at around 3 AM and lay awake for another hour or so before falling back to sleep - that can be frustrating.  Trust me - I know.  Been there, done that way way too many times.

But what can we do to improve our sleep and the longevity of that sleep?

Well I have been doing some research.  Here is a summary of things you can try:
  • Establish a bed-time routine.
    • Use this time to meditate and pray - getting all of the day's worries off your mind and into God's hands.  Also thank Him for the good things about that day.  This will remind you of your blessings and release your troubles.
    • Make a list for your upcoming day of activities - get all those reminders off your mind and in your phone "listing app" or on paper.
    • Include a relaxation playlist of music and be consistent on what time you rest each night. You can start that music as you start your bed-time routine, washing our face, brushing teeth, etc.  Or you can just start the music when you are finally in the bed and ready to wind down and sleep.  Either way can be beneficial.  I do this regularly and it makes a huge difference in getting my mind to calm down from the day's activities. Here is my list:
  • Make your sleeping environment comfortable.
    • Reduce clutter in your room.
    • Use comfortable sheets and clean them regularly.  I love these super cozy sheets I found that are microfiber and very soft.
  • Supplement mineral/vitamin deficiencies.
    • Incorporate a higher magnesium intake (since an alarming majority of Americans are deficient in this important mineral) - through supplements or better yet through application to your skin.
    • Here is a recipe for Magnesium Oil you can make at home.
    • Take some "sleepy dust" just before dozing off.  Salt and honey combination can assist with your body closing down for the night - here is a recipe for the amounts of sugar and salt to use and how much to take at bed-time.  But I prefer to use raw honey and sea salt.
  • Be mindful of the "resting zone."
    • Don't use electronics when you awaken in the middle of the night.  Just don't.
    • Don't turn on bright lights.
    • Don't start back over your list of things to do - if they come to mind - write them down and then forget them.  But try to do this before dozing the first time.
Some of these ideas were found in articles by nutritionist bloggers like Dr. Axe and Wellness Mama. They are the most prominent ideas/tips I have found and I am incorporating them into my personal routine to get into a more consistent and more continuous sleep pattern.

Let me know what you have found to be helpful in getting a "good night's sleep."

First natural hair care and now natural makeup

You remember my big claims for soap nuts.  If not you need to read about them.  I still use them in this natural hair care journey I am on.... but now, I am mixing them with Shikakai and Amla and I like that combination EVEN BETTER!

Going "no-poo" has been quite the journey.  And I will share more about the ups and downs and the trials and ERRORS in another post.

But now I have started to branch out into replacing more and more products that I use on a daily basis.  Especially those products that I apply to my face and body.  With that I am venturing out into some DIY recipes for foundation and makeup.  I like some that I am experimenting with but I didn't want to have to purchase the "extra" natural chemicals that I needed for the 'sunscreen' factor.

So that led me to the big new find:  Joppa Minerals.  I just found out about them and researched their ingredients and I am impressed.  And with all their COLORS, I decided to purchase some samples to get me started and try out a few.

I can't wait for them to come in.  I am totally psyched too because they are $10 dollars cheaper than the SAME size in the Bare Escentuals brand (which I have heard bad things about).  So with them being a safer more natural product AND TEN DOLLARS CHEAPER for a full size- How can I go wrong!?

As soon as I can try out my samples, I will post my reviews.

Till next time, my DIY friends......

Warning: Playing games with your children will make them Happy

Take some time out this weekend and get the kiddos outside.  I know how much they all love video games and being on the computer. Trust me. I do.abstract gold background

But it is healthier for them to have some time in the sun and to be exercising. Plus time spent with you and potentially other children will make them happier.

“But I’m bored”

This is one famous common phrase said by so many children, yet in today’s world – they have so much more stuff than “we” did when we were their age.  But in many ways with so much “more,” some of our little ones might have lost the incentive or the initiative to use their imaginations!

I remember times when I would act out a part in the backyard from a summer movie I had just seen; or just playing with friends from the neighborhood.

You don’t know any games to get them started, you say?

Here’s a link to just a few all-time favorites.

So pull out those memory banks, look at this link, put on your “play clothes” and go play with your kiddos outside this weekend!

I love Donald Miller…his blog and his books

If you haven’t read Donald’s blog, I have one word to describe his insight and perspective on Christianity: cool.

So to follow up , I wanted to also share a Christian resource that I enjoy and pull interesting perceptions from… Donald Miller’s blog.

Check him out… here’s a couple quotes from his blog post recently titled: How to Give Your Home and Your Stuff Meaning.

imageIt made me think about how cool it was that my friend, in preparing a ranch for others to be together and to be with God, was imitating the heart of God without, perhaps, even realizing he was doing it…

I’ve discovered a little secret my friend with the ranch must have discovered a long time ago: Managing God’s stuff for the enjoyment and comfort of the people God loves is a blast. It gives meaning to your things, and a feeling of importance to the places you get to live within…

What are the things you’ve done to convert your home into God’s home, a place you get to manage for Him?

Yeah, he’s just cool like that.  Brings the ideas about being a Christian… down home… into the heart of where we live.

Enjoy.

Without the heartbreak, you’re still making up stories

Are you afraid of falling in love? …of being in love, deeply in love?

Are you afraid of being alone?image

Is there a difference between fear of being alone and fear of being lonely?

We all want love. That is a common goal.  Yet we all fear losing that same love: our common fear.

These are just a few of the concepts covered by Susan Piver in just one of the articles in this month’s issue of fear.less.

I have been a subscriber since it began in May or June and though I do not believe in every ideology it expresses: I filter when I read (and I have enough confidence in my own faith and beliefs that I am comfortable reading materials that reference other faiths at times) so I have gleaned from the issues and especially liked this article about trust, fear, and relationships.

Buddhism references aside, interesting stuff…

Plus I love the layout of the design – and I want to learn how they do that with their pdf’s!

Check out this magazine (ezine): fear.less… if you dare.

Home Alone – the kiddos

If you are considering leaving your child(ren) home alone for small periods of time or during the afternoon while you are still at work, you may be wondering: what are the rules? Are there laws dictating at what age a child can be left at home alone?

According to About.com’s article linked below, few states mandate a specific age for allowing parents to leave their child at home.  However, National SAFEKIDS Campaign recommends no child be left at home alone under the age of 12.  At the age of 12 other factors also have be considered to determine if your child is ready for this new realm of responsibility and safety issues.  The article, “When Can I Begin to Leave My Children Home Alone?” provides some guidelines to consider before taking this ‘leap of faith.’

  • Is your child mature enough?
  • Leave a phone number where you can be reached.
  • Call and check in regularly
  • Establish a routine for your child to check in with you too.
  • Discuss expectations and what will be allowed while the child or children are home alone.  Is television permitted? Should homework be completed? Is the computer off limits?
  • Explain how to handle emergencies.

As a single parent, after school care can be an expensive budget item.  When your child nears the age of responsible independence, it’s tempting to urge them to spend this time at home and save on after-school care programs.  But make sure your child is comfortable with this new plan.  Ensure she feels confident with her ability to manage things on her own in your absence for those couple hours after school. Be sure to cover all the bases before making it a permanent solution.

We have been working on this plan in our home for a few weeks now that the school year is in full swing.  I can’t believe how much my kiddos have grown up.  They are becoming responsible young people right before my eyes.

What are some added tips you can share about leaving your tweens and teens at home alone?  Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

Creativity…How to get more of it

I found this article just today on 20 Tips from Psychology for Boosting Creativity from About.com.  Take the few minutes to read the article linked and take some time to innovatively expand on your own creativity.

    • Do you like to blog?  Use the blog as a realm or outlet for some of your creativity.
    • Do you like to write in a journal? Use the journal as your outlet.
    • Do you reward yourself for being curious: wanting to learn something new?  Perhaps it’s time to make allowances for your own curiosity and learn or new software to design a poster.

If you are like me, the time I get to set aside for such passions, or curiosities is only after the kiddos go to bed.  I work a full-time job and evenings are spent having dinner, doing homework, , and other evening meetings.  So regularly I schedule from 10 pm –11:30 pm.

During that me-time, I try to do any writing, blogging, research, photo organizing, personal devotions, etc. that I enjoy.

Take some time out for yourself and your creativity this week to keep your creative juices flowing and refreshed.

I’m way behind on getting my photos organized and out on the web, but I have been doing some writing about .

Don’t miss your next masterpiece, just because you didn’t make time for it to be discovered!

Making Dot Mom’s life a little easier

Girl Scout moms and leaders, listen to this tip.

Back when Kass was just a brownie one of the most dreaded tasks as a scout’s mom was to affix those blessed badges to her sash/vest of her uniform.  I not only dreaded it – I was bad at it. They wouldn’t stick and I didn’t want to pull out needle and thread for all those blasted wonderful, well earned badges.  Finally I found the key to an easy, inexpensive way to place them on the uniform of choice (without the need of a needle or even a glue gun).  PLUS we now keep them attached beyond wearing it to two events or more!!

Here’s my magical find:  Glue Dots.

So as a girl scout leader wanting to share this tidbit of info, when I learned about this blogging contest about my own secret weapon for badges and uniforms, I was totally game!

Here’s what I have found that works and keeps them affixed till the end of time:

  1. Place a glue dot every 1 or 2 inches around the perimeter and one in the center of each badge on image the underside.
  2. Position the badge on the vest/sash where it you want to be placed, moving it around until it’s just right.
  3. Press the badge in position with your fingertips around the edge and center of it.
  4. Take an iron and on medium heat, press from the “UNDERSIDE” of the fabric of your uniform sash or vest to make the adhesive solidify to the max.  If you press from the underside of the fabric instead of from top of the badge itself, the heat reaches the adhesive more thoroughly.
  5. Voila! That badge is not going anywhere, I promise.

Adora Svitak – interesting lesson for us adults

What an amazing 12 year old.  You must view this video where she articulates how we as parents or adults in general can be more helpful to future generations by simply “reciprocating” and learning from children as they also in turn learn from us.

Save Money: Wash clothes with no detergent?

Photoxpress_3855495It’s not (budget crunch month) but when shared this video clip with me from Money Talks, I  was intrigued and had to share it with my readers.  According to tests referenced by www.MoneytalksNews.com you can actually get mildly soiled clothes clean by simply agitating them in a modern washing machine.  And if you do need soap – they have a recipe/formula for making your own that literally costs 2 pennies a load! Yeah, that’s right two cents!

Another tip for saving money with laundry they don’t mention (that I personally put into practice) is don’t wash every piece of clothing after just one wear.  Now this only works if you bathe daily. (I know you do, right?)  But think about it – if the jeans you just wore are not soiled – wear them two or three times before throwing them in the laundry.  Other dress slacks and tops can be done the same way if they don’t have dirt on them and no odor.

So try one or two of these tips and start saving money – this week on laundry.

Here’s a link to

I know at the very least I am going to start cutting back on the amount of detergent I measure out per load and start saving today.

Narcissistic; who me?

I read The John Tesh blog daily.  And in a recent post he talks about pitfalls that could slow the progress of your spiritual growth. (Check out that post; it’s full of good stuff on spiritual growth.) And I wanted to focus on my spiritual life.  But one thing specifically that caught my attention in his post I wanted to share here:

Quote…

Narcissism

There's a thin line between narcissism and "following your bliss." Without some degree of sacrifice for the greater good, self-discovery eventually leads to plain old self-indulgence. Be aware of your tendency toward excessive self-centeredness even as you work to heal and love your own tender self.

With that in mind it got me thinking.  I try to indulge in “finding yourself” and helping others learn toimage appreciate the person God meant for you to be: Learning to love yourself so you can in turn more effectively love others.  But do we (ok I am pointing the finger at myself this time) do I cross this line sometimes?

Comfortable in my skin

I enjoy being comfortable in my own skin.  This was a long time coming and now at the I feel I have finally found out more about who I am than ever before in my history.

So the question then is where is that line for self-centeredness? I don’t want to be guilty of self-centeredness… and a quick interjection here: I have been working on my ‘ of improving my spiritual walk: I am now consistently attending Wednesday night classes at my church (hadn’t been on Wednesdays in a year or three) and I am trying (emphasis trying) to be more consistent with my devotional and Bible reading time.  Hey, it’s still a work in progress with me and I gave my readers that list of goals so you could keep me accountable.  But I digress… talking about me again; let’s get back to my fear of being self-centered:

Here is another article/blog post on the topic of narcissism that really makes you stop and evaluate your walk; wow.

What do you think?

I sincerely want to hear your thoughts because this isn’t ‘all about me.’  Share your opinions below in the comments section.

And here’s a link to a test to see if you are Narcissistic according to an article in USA Today last year.

My Children Survived; Yours Will Too

125125logo Last year I was asked to write an article for www.Little-Red-Bus.com.  It’s a site focusing on parenting and children (another great resource).  I was again thrilled at the invitation.  We worked through some details and I decided to do an article on children surviving divorce, more specifically my children surviving our divorce.

I won’t post but it does contain some tips that I found through personal experience that seemed to help my kids through the rough road we had ahead of us at the time.  (I hope you will jump over there to and check it out.)

Now all these years later, I can look back and say:  at least some of the things I tried to do worked - for my kiddos anyway.  They are both doing well in school, have active social lives, are physically fit, and have hearty appetites… so overall I am quite proud of them for enduring the road of divorce and still being .

The Secret to Love that Lasts

Well if you haven’t been keeping up, February is relationships month on SOLO dot MOM. With Valentine’s Day around the corner and the official one year anniversary for me and , what better time to talk about relationships.urban scene

I can talk about relationships all day and they don’t have to be romantic; all relationships in our lives are important and worth evaluating to make them better.  With this thought in the back of my mind, I recently read a blogpost, “The Key to Lasting Love May Surprise You,” by my fave author, Donald Miller.  He references an article found in magazine, titled: , by Robert Epstein.

There were several exercises outlined in the original article that the author also uses in the classroom as they study increasing bonds in relationships.  They range from “Soul Gazing” (staring into the eyes of your partner) to “Let Me Inside” (closing in on each other’s space intentionally getting as close as you can without touching) or “Secret Swap” (sharing a deep secret).  Through research he has determined these to be effective “Love Building Exercises” increasing positive affection toward the other person (even when they were strangers). Several exercises make up his full list.

I enjoyed Miller’s post and  after reading the mentioned article in full I could appreciate his summarizing positivity as a key factor.  He also mentions another article, The Happy Couple by Suzann Pileggi which highlights the fact that “thriving couples accentuate the positive” in life as a couple. Recently I shared about being a cheerleader for your spouse in my .  It’s nothing new for me to agree with this idea.

So is this the secret key to long lasting happy marriages?  Keeping a positive attitude and approaching your significant other with the idea that the glass is half full not half empty will be encouraging, uplifting, and should be reciprocated… well most of the time.  So that’s promising.

Michele Dortch shares in her latest blogpost some other keys that I think are also important and tie in with with this idea.  She reviews the book, titled: The Language of Love & Respect: Cracking the Communication Code with Your Mate by: Dr. Emerson Eggrichs.  The communication ‘codes’ simplified are: for the ladies to communicate respect to their spouse and for the men to communicate love.  How profound.

Perhaps there is more than one key to happy long lasting relationships.  Communication and commitment also rank pretty high.  But trying them out and keeping them in the forefront of our minds are more important than just knowing what they are.  Practice makes perfect.  So I plan to practice these keys.  I know I have tried to be a positive person for many years, but I also know there are times I can speak with a lack of respect to someone (especially those closest to me).  Even if it’s subtle disrespect, it still is… disrespect.  I’m just being transparent.

This is where I want to focus on my relationship skills: communicating with respect consistently. And this goes for all relationships in my life: with my children, Mr. M., family members, and friends.  Now that doesn’t mean I’m not going to try out those other “love building exercises” I read about.  “Soul Gazing” sounds interesting, for example as well as “Let Me Inside”.  But respect will be primary.

February is not only going to be relationship focus month, but also having fun in your relationships month!  Well… you know what I mean.

Leave a comment below with what you consider to be a key to happy long lasting relationships.

Gutsy Gus and Staying on Track

It’s already February and my monthly missions are in full swing.

January’s Mission

January I wanted to focus on finances, better spending habits, and possible ways to supplement my income.  I shared tips with my readers about and were even highlighted on another blog resource.

I also joined a freelance website where you establish a profile and test your skills to add to your credibility.  Once you get setup with all their qualifiers, you can bid on jobs as a provider.  I hope to finish my profile soon and take a stab at this for some extra writing jobs. We shall see how that works out. The site is www.Elance.com.

Miracle in Sumatra

imageIn the midst of my monthly missions I am also still reviewing books as they are sent to me free to read and share a review.  The latest is a children’s story. Miracle in Sumatra: The Story of Gutsy Gus by Jeanne McNaney.  This is a cute story about an orangutan and a little girl and their adventure when a hunter takes the orangutan's parents. An angel that looks over the jungle helps them by turning the little girl into an orangutan so she can assist her new little furry friend with the challenge of finding his parents.  The story and it's deeper meaning about taking care of animals and their well being is a good story to share with children and I would recommend it.  The artwork is excellent and will keep your child’s attention throughout the book.

About the Author (as quoted from the publisher):

Jeanne currently resides in Old Greenwich, Conn., with her husband and three young children. Her first children’s book, “The Legend of Honey Hollow” (Ovation Books, January 2009), introduces children to environmentalism... She has served on the board of Pathways, Inc., which provides housing for mentally ill adults. She currently sits on the board of governors for the We Are Family Foundation and is an active volunteer with the Old Greenwich School.

When it comes to BUDGETS, keep it simple – Part 2

Early on I told you, my readers, I was going to have monthly missions for 2010.  January was about finances.  In sharing with you about budgets last week, I split up an article I wrote a year ago on the topic.  Last week and this week those two articles (Part 1 and 2) were highlighted on a lovely blog entitled, Integrated Mother.  The founder, Michele Dortch, wanted to use the material and helped me polish it up a bit.  I was very excited to get the articles featured.  Below is part 2 “When it comes to Budgets, keep it simple”  but I hope you will jump over to Integrated Mother to see it there as well as participate in comments and discussion.

When it comes to budgets, keep it simple

HandsLast week I described the you must have before setting a budget. Now it’s time to set  the budget! When you think about it, budgeting is simple. You have a set income and what you spend each month shouldn’t exceed that amount. Simple!

But for many, it’s not that simple so I’ve broken down the elements of a budget here with some suggestions for how to allocate your money. For the sake of this illustration, we’ll assume your income is $1,000 per month. Here is how I suggest allocating your expenses:

Charity – 10%: In my personal budget, I take 10% off the top and give it to my church, my charity of choice and something I believe in.

Mortgage/rent – 25%: This is the normally suggested range for housing expenses.

Food – 20%: Include the amount for groceries and prepared foods.

Transportation/gas – 11%: This is money spent for gas, tolls, and car payments. You might need to eliminate a car payment and drive an older, used vehicle.

Child care – 10% This can be expensive, but may be less if you solicit friends or family to help in this area.

Insurance – 2-3%: This includes auto, home, life, and health insurance premiums. Try to combine plans for auto and home to get the best rate.

Health care expenses – 2%: With children you’ll have the occasional co-pay for doctor’s visits as well as the medications (ask for generic)

Utilities – 5%: These differ by the season and/or usage, but an average monthly electric bill and water combined would be about 5%.

Phone, cable, Internet – 6%: Consolidate where possible. Cable is a luxury for many households, as is the Internet. Determine if these are some things you can afford.

Debt payments – 0%: These include credit cards, student loans, leased furniture payments, or anything you have purchased on credit. Being debt free would allow you to leave zero in this section.

Total fixed expenses = 92% of your budget, or $920 in this example.

Use the left-over 8% of your income for the “extras” like clothing, self-care, vacation, entertainment, dining out, home repairs, and landscape maintenance. And be sure that you don’t under-estimate the upkeep for your own home, if you aren’t renting. Prepare for these expenses – trust me. Also, the “extra” 8% should be used to reduce your debt if you have any.

Speaking of debt, you can probably tell that I’m a strong advocate for living within your means and removing “debt required living” from your lifestyle. Train yourself to live within your means and avoid pulling out your credit card for a quick fix. The stress of getting in over your head isn’t worth it.

I suggest having only one credit card for emergency purposes, and then cut up all others. To safeguard against impulse buying, give that one credit card to a friend or secure it in a safe place (not your wallet!) to help you be accountable to your promise not to use it except in the case of an emergency!

Remember, this is a bare bones, basic budget outline. You’ll need to customize it to your unique situation. The important part is to keep your expenses under control. At the end of the day, impulse buying and frivolous spending gets you more things (that you have to figure out how to store). Do things matter most?

As Far As Mondays Go….

For my day off Monday, I was able to get some things done around the house and finished reading a book I started recently titled, Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart by Beth Pattillo.  I received an advance copy to do a review from Phenix & Phenix Literary Publicists and was very impressed.  If any of you reading this post are Jane Austen fans.. let me start by saying:  you definitely must read this book.  And if you aren’t crazy about Jane Austen – but you think Mr. Darcy is the dreamiest… then you also must read this book.

It’s of course a love story… but enticing and exciting with it’s setting in Oxford as the main character, Claire, takes a week long seminar about Pride and Prejudice and in turn meets her very own version of Mr. Darcy.  Since she already has a boyfriend back home (Neil), it proves to be quite the love triangle as it quickly evolves into something she hadn’t intended.  Her good intentions also place her in the middle of a mystery long held at Oxford as she finds herself in possession of some ancient writings never published of the renowned author, Jane Austen.

The plot picks up quickly right from the start and keeps you captivated, because I couldn’t put the book down.  For me that doesn’t happen often, but this book did the job well.  So you may want to and check it out for yourself.

There’s still more to my Monday being a good day.  Not only because I was able to get some things done (including that book, Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart) but also because my blog was highlighted on a social community website – just for moms! I was so flattered when they approached me late last year about this opportunity to be highlighted for a week during their blog tour on .  I started visiting last year and found it a good resource for kids crafts, holiday ideas, family fun, recipes, saving money, alternative health and nutrition…even ways to keep the romance in your personal life.   I hope you will take a moment to visit their site, www.mom-stuff.com, take a look around, and leave a comment or two.  I also have a quick link on the top right side bar of my blog where you can click over to their site anytime.

So as far as Mondays go - a day off, with time to catch up, read a good book, AND get my blog site highlighted by www.mom-stuffcommunity.com, that’s not such a bad Monday.

BUDGET Woes? Try this – Part One

Budgets:  They aren’t fun, but they are a necessity.  As a single mom, I’m the sole breadwinner and I’ve found there are two choices that let me successfully support myself while raising my children:  image

  1. I can sit around in self-pity, moaning and groaning about what I don’t have and wishing away life as I run up credit card debt; or
  2. I can embrace my current financial status, appreciate it and create a financial strategy that lets me live well and get out of debt.

I choose the latter, and I hope you will too because it’s really the first step to create and keep a good budget.

Embrace where you are.

– Your life is perfect. That may be strange to hear if you’re in a stressful financial position. But if you have a job, then be grateful. If you are unemployed continue working towards the goal of getting a job. Be willing to accept something – even if it is not your dream job right at first. Getting a job somewhere will be better than no job and no income. Always be grateful for where you are and what you have in life. Focus on the positive aspects of your current circumstances and remember the glass is half full. Count your blessings which include more than just your income.

Appreciate what you have and enjoy it!

– You have a roof over your head. You have food to eat and provide for your family. Instead of buying things, pull out the things you already own; put them to use and enjoy them. These might include books, music, instruments, games, etc. that are collecting dust in your closet. Make use of the things you already own instead of mulling over a wish list of the ‘other’ things you want.

Don’t compare yourself (or your possessions) with others.

A writer once said of her younger growing up years that she didn’t know how poor she was till she befriended a rich girl. If we stop comparing ourselves to others and what they have, we might find we don’t even miss those extra things. Things are not as fulfilling as the media makes them out to be. If you own “this must have item” it still won’t bring you true happiness.

Keep life simple so you can save – every penny counts.

– Even the smallest of luxuries can be cut back to make way for other uses like getting out of debt or saving for a rainy day. Small luxuries include specialized coffee drinks, soft drinks with lunch (get ice water), or vending machine items for snacks. Making even the smallest sacrifices, will allow you to put money left over toward reducing your debt or increasing savings.

Once you embrace your current financial position, appreciate what you have and are content with the here and now, it will be easier to stick to a budget and make it work. You may also be surprised at how leading a simple financial life leads to enjoying a richer life overall.

Stay tuned for Part 2 – The Simple Monthly Budget
